The BBC has a close working relationship with Glastonbury Festival which stretches back for decades, and it has always been one of my favourite live music events. I worked on broadcasts from site every year that the festival took place, from my first in 1993 as a young audio engineer to my last in 2017.
By that time I was managing the production of live music audio from six stages for global broadcast on TV, radio and digital platforms. This involved: matching appropriate technical resources—and the BBC’s remarkable audio engineering talent—to the music stages; negotiation and liaison with artists, management and labels; technical and creative judgement of music recordings; management of relationships with internal stakeholders and external partners; and responsibility for the smooth functioning and safety of production teams spread across the site.
