In March 2012 BBC 6 Music celebrated its tenth birthday, and I developed and produced a live music event to mark the occasion.
The one-night event at London’s Southbank Centre comprised two separate music performance areas, headlined by Public Image Ltd and Laura Marling, with continuous DJ sets by 6 Music presenters in a connecting space.
I was responsible for artist bookings and negotiations, managing relationships with the Southbank Centre and stakeholders across the BBC, and coordinating on-air promotion and ticket sales. I scheduled the stages, oversaw advance production communications with artists, and created the broadcast plan. I took overall responsibility for event risk management from build to breakdown, and oversaw venue operations on the day.
6 Music Live at the Southbank was a great success, with tickets selling out within hours of going on sale and audience acclaim after the event. It became the blueprint for the 6 Music Festival, which began the following year and which continues to this day.
This was the biggest event that 6 Music had staged at that point in time. It allowed me to demonstrate my ability to produce a high-quality music event with exceptional broadcast content, in the face of short timescales, a small team, and limited budgets.
